MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Happening today, a special camp for kids with speech impediments starts on the campus of the University of South Alabama. “Camp. Dream. Speak. Live.” is aimed at helping kids with the life-long challenge of stuttering.
Four children who participated in the first camp of its kind in Israel for children who stutter explain to us how best to behave with them and towards them: “Maybe some of us take a little longer to complete sentences, certainly when we are excited. Wait patiently, you may be surprised by what we have to say.”
This July saw 27 children from across the region with speech and language difficulties participate in a unique fun-filled and educational camp at University of Limerick designed for children who stammer.

As a person who stutters, my clinical training and research support experience with the Blank Center provided me with the insight into all that I felt I needed and all that I wanted to give to other people who stutter. My undergraduate and graduate experience has allowed me to gain the confidence and skills to pursue my dreams.
The Blank Center teaches us to be confident in our speech, and we learn not to hate ourselves because of it, and we learn to get stronger.
As a graduate student from Belgium, I had the chance of a lifetime to study with Dr. Byrd. The lessons I gained from the Blank Center profoundly impacted both my professional and personal life. I have since specialized in stuttering and supported programming in Ireland and in Belgium, and hope to one day establish a satellite center in my home country as all persons all around the world are in need of this life-changing CARE.
